NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Meet Matt Tedder, Owen Danoff, Joe Maye

VoiceThe fourth edition of the Blind Auditions on “The Voice” aired Tuesday night, and this episode wasted no time in busting out a little bit of star power. We’re going to be updating this episode review live as always, so be sure to keep checking back through the night to get our take on some other performances.

Tamar Davis, “Chain of Fools” – She has connections to the music industry that go back a super-long ways, and she’s friends with … Tyler Perry! In between appearing here and giving ideas to “Survivor” host Jeff Probst, the guy is everywhere with reality TV these days. Ultimately, her choice here was pretty clear given what she likely wants from herself as an artist. Team Christina.

Jessica Crosby, “Viva la Vida” – This is the sort of audition that we feel like was worthy of a turn based more on effort than the actual quality of what we heard. This arrangement was weird given the song she was doing, and she was not always on pitch. Still, she got three coaches to turn! Team Pharrell.

Justin Whisnant, “Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” – He may dress a little different than the average country singer, but the reality here is still the same: Justin is a country singer from Oklahoma. That tells you a lot about who he will pick. Team Blake.

Daniel Passino, “Marvin Gaye” – Very competent soul performer. We’ve heard better on the show, but he has a nice sense of pitch and how to craft phrases. There’s been several Blake vs. Christina showdowns this episode, but the latter won this time. Team Christina.

Owen Danoff, “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right” – Who doesn’t love a good folk song? We really like Owen’s tone, and we feel like with the right songs in his arsenal, he is someone who has the potential to last a really long time in this competition. Predictable coach pick. Team Adam.

Maya Smith, “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” – Second Aretha Franklin song tonight. We actually think a newer song would’ve been a better choice for her rather than trying to equal Aretha’s incredible voice here. She did get some chairs to turn, and we think that Pharrell is the right person to help her in this department. Team Pharrell.

Brittney Lawrence, “Warrior” – She has tried out for this show SEVEN times. Serious commitment. We do see a lot of good stuff in her voice, but there are some things to work on when it comes to her stage presence and getting the emotional connection to the song. This is what her coach can now help! Team Christina.

Matt Tedder, “(I’m Your) Hoochie Coochie Man” – This is a good steal for Adam Levine. We like the sense of artistry that we heard here, and we get the sense that he will do versatile, interesting things and could last a while if he cultivates a good bond with his coach. Team Adam.

Joe Maye, “I Put a Spell on You” – Christina’s team this season is STACKED. Also, it was obviously that Joe was going to choose her given the fact that she performed a little duet with her. He would’ve looked terrible to turn her away after that. Team Christina.
