‘Black Sails’ season 3, episode 6 review: Jack’s big move and an epic swordfight
If you truly enjoy all things swashbuckling as much any sort of pirate fan really should, there was a lot to enjoy in this past episode of “Black Sails.”
So where is the right place to really even begin here? It’s hard to pinpoint, but we’d say that the big news here was Jack’s refusal to give up the money, and in doing so putting Woodes in a position where his quest to conquer Nassau would not work out nearly as well. The consequences of his decision could be severe, especially with his orders to Anne to take off and kill if necessary. She has the gems, and the quest for wealth is going to lead her to being a focal point for at least the immediate future.
Was this a particularly smart decision on Jack’s part? We’re not entirely sure that we can answer that question, for now, we at least are willing to say that it is a heck of a fun decision for us as a show viewer. Sometimes we gotta think for ourselves here!
The other enormous highlight to this episode for us goes beyond just Vane and Flint getting to be back around each other; it is, of course, the epic battle between Flint and Teach that showed us that this show does duels better than almost any other. We’ve come to learn that Blackbeard isn’t exactly in the best overall physical shape, but hey, the guy’s still Blackbeard. You gotta fear him, since he’s got the reputation to back up his claims. He did somehow slink away still breathing after the epic battle, but we’re not entirely sure what the show will do with him now. Maybe the only concern here is that you build up to this too quickly? We hesitate to say this, mostly because this was so incredible to watch.
Anyway, we know that we’re gearing up more and more now for Anne to be a focal point given who knows about her treasure … and Spain is still out there. Given their power, that has to be coming back up in due time. Episode Grade: A-.
