‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 6, episode 18 review: Mona back in the spotlight

So far, the second half of “Pretty Little Liars” season 6 has been a little scattershot. There have been some particular storylines that are interesting, and then others that make us question why we’re dealing with much of the same sort of high-school drama.

For example, does anyone really care about Hanna being upset at her mother over a supposed lack of interest she has shown in fiance Jordan? This whole Jordan romance story is going nowhere quick, largely because we have seen far too little of him to care. To us, it was more interesting seeing Toby and Spencer around one another again. The past is coming back in a big way for our leading ladies, with Aria most notably starting to spend more and more time with Ezra as the two work on the book together. It’s a shame that at no point during this process, anyone has learned a whole lot regarding just who this stalker may be.

The biggest “reveal” this week is that Mona may have placed a phone call that puts her right back in the crosshairs as a potential “A” suspect … again. This is a road that we’ve all been down before, and that is what makes it a little more challenging to think that she could be involved this time. It just seems too obvious. Do we think that Mona may have some sort of role to play in all of the madness? Sure, but it’s not something so sinister as her killing Charlotte … or at least we think. Also, do we really need to see the police line up Aria as a suspect? Again?

We do continue to enjoy “PLL” for the mystery and the risk; however, there are still so many reminders on this show of how the more things change, the more they stay the same. Grade: C+.
