‘Call the Midwife’ season 5, episode 5 spoilers: Stephen McGann on key Dr. Turner storyline

Dr. Turner

The fifth season of “Call the Midwife” has been so far one where the doctors and other characters have all started to realize the aftereffects of some of their medical decisions, and on Sunday night’s new episode in particular, a key revelation could be coming down for Stephen McGann and his character of Dr. Turner: Maybe it is not too wonderful an idea for him to keep up some of the smoking habits.

Speaking on this subject to the Radio Times leading up to this weekend’s installment, the actor makes it clear precisely what some of the circumstances could be that cause his character to realize that some of what he is doing happens to be rather problematic:

“It’s been coming for Doctor Turner … In the 1950s they were beginning to suss out the effects of smoking. There was a famous British Medical Journal study done. They wanted thousands of smokers to take part in a long-term survey and they wanted professional people who could be relied on to give good data. Who did they go to? The doctors. Our understanding was actually increased by the Doctor Turners of the world.”

McGann also makes it clear in the chat that his character’s actions have led to some real-life complications, with people asking him why he continues to allow Dr. Turner to do this:

“Very often doctors will come up to me, with good reason, and say, ‘Please can you drop the smoking?’ … I do get what they are saying. I’m not a smoker myself and I understand, but I say, ‘It’s authentic. It’s what he would have done.'”
