‘Survivor: Kaoh Rong’ spotlight: Is Julia Sokolowski one of the biggest underdogs

Julia -

We’re starting to get to the end of our “Survivor: Kaoh Rong” spotlight series, and today that means highlighting someone in Julia Sokolowski who is going to be notable right off the bat. She was only 18 years old at the time of starting this game, which makes her one of the youngest people to ever play.

However, is that an asset or a weakness? Are there some other parts of her personality that will help her rise to the top? Let’s try to figure that out now.

Age – 18

Location – Boston, Massachusetts. She attends Boston University, but before that she grew up in Vermont.

Tribe – Gondol a.k.a. the Beauty tribe.

Occupation – Student. This one’s pretty much cut-and-dry.

Past “Survivor” comparison – There is a little bit of Kelly Shinn (a.k.a. Purple Kelly) and Natalie Tenerelli here, and not only in terms of her age. She seems to be incredibly energetic, and invested in trying to prove to people that she’s not just a young person with little life experience playing the game. You could also compare her to one of any of the young people on the Fans tribe of “Survivor: Caramoan” who went home early … especially since Julia claims to be a huge fan. (She name-drops Jenna Morasca, which you wouldn’t do if you only started watching the show after you applied.)

Things to know – Julia spent time in between her junior and senior years of high school in Tanzania, where she learned a lot about life, taught English, and learned at least some survival skills. She has at least some life experience as a result of that, and she’s also done Habitat for Humanity.

Advantages – Julia is right that she’ll probably be underestimated, and this is probably true especially for some of what she contributes around camp. She should do find in the challenges, and personality-wise she’s going to be able to be an appealing alliance partner to other players. She’s the sort of person we can easily envision other people wanting to work with, especially some of the other women on her tribe.

Disadvantages – Here’s the problem: Julia’s going to have to make a case to these other people that she is hard-working, strategic, and a force to be reckoned with in this game, and that is so much easier said than done. While there have been young people who have won this game, it’s difficult, especially when it comes to being able to make some of those interpersonal connections. Can Julia related to someone like a Kyle or a Debbie? It’s going to be a challenge.

Prediction – Julia is almost to a T the sort of player who will either go home really early or be around for a long time in the game. She also strikes us as someone like Natalie who will be willing to go far in the game with a big threat like Boston Rob and then lose in the final three. We do think that she’s capable of making some big movies, but we’re not sure that she will be able to get the players necessary on board.
