‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ gets Scott Kelly, President Obama for Super Bowl opening

Following Super Bowl 50, there was still some work to be done on CBS. Specifically, we’re talking about “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which had the challenge of trying to keep most of those viewers around for a significant stretch of time. Colbert has a great lineup that includes Tina Fey and Megyn Kelly … and he also had a fun opening.

While we’re not sure that we would call this opening particularly roll-on-the-ground hilarious, it was fun to see Stephen “throw a football” to some special guests on various locations. For example, we saw some soldiers in Afghanistan, astronaut Scott Kelly at the International Space Station, and also President and Michelle Obama for a fun pre-taped piece. What was interesting about is that you could see a few nerves here and there; this is live TV, and almost anything can happen and there are no re-takes.

After the opening, Colbert went to some of his actual guests on the night in Margot Robbie and Tina Fey, and this interview was pretty awkward as we listened to him talk to the ladies about sports. It was very early in the show for some guests to come, but clearly this is what “The Late Show” felt like they needed in order to keep the audience.

In the end, we are rather interested to see if most of the football crowd embraces this idea and actually watched as opposed to the typical scripted show. Then again, does it really even matter? We’re not sure, since ratings for these post-Super Bowl events never tend to stick.
