2016 Super Bowl commercials: Can ‘Kung Fu Panda’ really sell Wix.com?

Wix -

At the moment, “Kung Fu Panda 3” is one of the top movies in Hollywood, so with that in mind, why wouldn’t Wix.com want to implement Po in some way in an ad for their website-builder? It’s a super-smart idea to play on what is popular right now, and it’s a good chance for them to get family audiences interested during the Super Bowl.

Check out our full review of the spot’s effectiveness below!

The idea – Po and his family are trying to find a way to get the noodle shop properly advertised, and eventually they settle on Wix.com as a way to better get the name out there. The ad hypes up the website-builder as something that is simple an easy to do.

What works – Obviously, getting Dreamworks on board and using these characters was brilliant in an effort to get this ad more attention. Website-builders are not typically the sort of companies to get attention during the big game, and Wix uses just enough time in here to show you how their product works.

What doesn’t – Is it just us, or does having children’s animated characters promoting a product come across a little odd? We like to imagine “Kung Fu Panda” being a world where things aren’t as corporate and they don’t have sponsors. Maybe this is just us, but we can’t see Anna and Elsa from “Frozen” coming in a commercial to advertise a new air conditioner. (Sure, Disney will put them on any product known to man, but it’s a little different.)

Overall Grade – B-. If you don’t mind having fictional characters advertising a product, there’s a lot to like here. It’s bright, it’s funny, and the product is highlighted well. The premise here is something that just throws us off a little.
