2016 Super Bowl commercials: Skittles has fun with Steven Tyler

Skittles -Who doesn’t love to Taste the Rainbow? Skittles are one of the most popular candy companies out there for a reason (they’re tasty), but does their latest Super Bowl 50 commercial live up to how much we enjoy the product? You can watch it below complete with our take of it. (For the record, you can watch / see our take on other commercials over here.)

The idea – Apparently, it involves Steven Tyler seeing a piece of art of himself made out of Skittles, pressing it to sing the notes of “Dream On” properly, and then watching as the artwork falls apart on the floor. Yet, the lips keep on singing.

What works – Hey, it’s Skittles. They do this sort of weird stuff all the time. It’s never funny; sometimes it’s even sad like with the dude who turns everything he touches into Skittles. They go for the shock value here, and obviously it works because they keep going back to the well.

Also, kudos on getting Tyler, a presence so weird and out-there it almost works for what you’re trying to do here.

What doesn’t – Pretty much almost everything else. It’s not funny, it’s not engaging, and most of all the singing candy-lips kind of freak us out. We’ve never understood why these ads are out there for the company.

Overall Grade – D-. We like Skittles a lot. These aren’t offensive or anything in a way that would make us not want to eat the candy anymore, but they’re also a waste of time and talent for the most part to watch. We’re fine with weird if there’s a point; we just don’t get it other than “look, we’re going to throw you off with a weird ad.”
