‘American Idol 15’ review: MacKenzie Bourg, John Wayne Schulz, Emily Brooke try to impress

American Idol -Wednesday night’s new episode of “American Idol” season 15 proved in some ways to be the ultimate test. It was a chance to see how many of our favorite singers fared when facing the most adversity yet. They had to perform on their own in front of the judges, and a lot of them went very far only to be eliminated by the judges and losing their chance to making it to a live show.

For the sake of this article, we want to point out a few of the familiar faces from the show that were standouts in our eyes and hopefully yours.

John Wayne Schulz – Even without the cowboy hat, he still found a way to be genuine and passionate like always. Great performance.

Emily Brooke – Yep, she’s still a favorite. We don’t see how she doesn’t at least make the top 24.

MacKenzie Bourg – He’s always been quirky and creative, but this original-song performance probably is the best vocal he’s done this season.

Shelbie Z. – From one former contestant to another. Shelbie has made a habit out of performing songs that have been made famous either courtesy of singing-show alumni or by them on shows. This time, she did “Alone,” which Carrie Underwood killed in season 4.

Sonika Vaid – Beautiful performance. This may be the best Ariana Grande song out there, and while she needs to emote a little bit more, she’s got a killer sound.

Jessica Cabral – Despite being apparently sick, she still gave a great, albeit raspy, vocal.

James VIII – This was a nice improvement over everything that we’ve heard on the show from him so far, but we’re still not feeling the sound that much.

The majority of the people we’ve mentioned here (plus some other favorites like Manny Torres and Jenn Blosil) are moving on … but how do you send John home? We don’t even like country music for the most part, but feel like he was the best guy in the genre this season.
