‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 3 spoilers: Elizabeth Henstridge speaks more on Simmons, Fitz’s future

Is the second half of “Agents of SHIELD” going to finally mark the time in which we see Fitz and Simmons together? When you look at the present state of their relationship, there is very little doubt that they have progressed quite a bit since the days of the pilot. They’ve kissed, the romance is there, and they share similar interests. So what is the holdup? Well, there is such a thing still as PTSD, and the show is smartly taking what Simmons went through on Maveth seriously. There is not a pressing need to get these two together before she has adjusted back to ordinary life once again, and that includes also handling everything that transpired with her surviving while Will did not make it through alive.

Speaking on this further to Entertainment Weekly, Elizabeth Henstridge sets up the story with the following:

“She’s experiencing some survivor’s guilt. Fitz has been so supportive throughout the whole thing. She’s going further down that path with him and her feelings. She loves him and wants to be with him. She hasn’t forgotten about Will, but it’s more the guilt she’s carrying. They’re taking things slowly on whether they’re going to get together or not.”

The good news is that “Agents of SHIELD” does have plenty of flexibility to continue to exercise as much patience as possible with this story. There is no clear indication that the show is ending anytime soon, and while it is not a ratings dynamo, the numbers are still good enough to likely give the show another year. For the fourth season, we’d love to see these two characters as a couple.
