‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5: Lana Parrilla offers support to Swan Queen fans after Emma, Regina comments
This particular “Once Upon a Time” story is interesting to us, mostly because of the fact that it shows the strength and passion of the ‘shipper community.
If you may recall, we posted a recent story about an interview that Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parrilla did with Natalie Abrams of Entertainment Weekly. In it, Parrilla described the relationship between her character of Regina and Jennifer Morrison’s Emma with the following:
“I always see their relationship as best friends and sisters … I’m nervous to say that because there are so many SwanQueens out there that see something else, and I don’t want to take that away from them.”
We actually felt at the time that she tackled the subject about as well as she could, mostly because she expressed her viewpoint while being kind to those who felt otherwise. She understands that the Swan Queen audience out there is huge, and they see something in that relationship that inspires them. That’s something that exists beyond the show, and it doesn’t have to be canon on it for those feelings to be there.
Still, the comments caused some backlash among fans, mostly because this is the Age of Outrage and almost everything leads to backlash. Therefore, Parrilla posted a further message to Twitter yesterday explaining more of what she meant by the comments, and that she will always support Swan Queen fans even though she doesn’t have the same viewpoint about the Emma – Regina relationship. She has a certain perspective with which she uses to play her character, and that is what she sticks to.
Hopefully, this will be the end of this saga for now. Personally, we’re a fan of every ‘ship if only because it allows for more imagination and thought beyond the show. The more critical thinking that a show allows us to have, the more active we are as a community.

tumblr and twitter my friend… several sq shippers were pissed… and some weren’t. I believe there was some hate directed at Lana over twitter, and I saw a lot of people defending her on tumblr. (hate too on tumblr, but more love than twitter). There was also random hate directed at Lana earlier this week or last over twitter, so some Lana fans are still riled up over that too, as they very well should be
