“The Bachelor” is almost two shows in one: There is the show that it proclaims to be when you watch it live, which is all about love and romance of the finest kind, and then there is the show that ABC makes it out to be in the promos. You never hear any of that sweet musical or see heartfelt moments; instead, you have them making the contestants out to be “crazy” (taken out of context from a Ben Higgins confessional, most likely) or highly emotional. We’re sure how that is a great depiction of their everyday behavior, but okay.
We could turn this article into a think-piece discussing reality TV editing and their many practices, but hey, there’s already “UnREAL” out there for that (albeit in an exaggerated way). The promo below shouldn’t really be taken as any surprise, mostly because it is not any different than any other released by the network in years. Are there romantic dates? Sure, but there are also moments where people are in tears.
Format-wise, there’s no reason for the producers to change things up: What they do works, and it gets huge ratings and people talking on social media. The only things that really change year-to-year are some of the contestants competing and the lead. Even the latter is somewhat similar every time, save for maybe Juan Pablo. The show works on the strength of the contestants, and here’s hoping that Ben has some interesting ones.
