‘Chicago Fire’ season 4: Show boss defends latest Casey – Dawson twist

Chicago Fire -Fans of “Chicago Fire” have been on the emotional equivalent of popular Walt Disney World ride the Tower of Terror for the past year or so. We’ve seen Dawson and Casey come together, split up, Dawson get pregnancy, Casey get captured, Casey get saved, Dawson and Get get back together, and now Dawson lose her baby. That is a heck of a lot of drama for two people to go through. Right when viewers were starting to get excited about the idea of these two starting a family, the child is taken away.

Fans have certainly seemed to be shocked and even saddened by the twist, but show executive producer Matt Olmstead has a pair of different explanations for it. First, he tells TVLine that sometimes in life, these sort of devastating events do happen:

“It’s not to say there won’t potentially be a baby that goes to term down the road … But it’s one of the unfortunate events that can happen when people get pregnant. Not to be dismissive of that, [but] it certainly gives us drama… I would put up that episode against any other in terms of the emotional component.”

Also, he explained that when it comes to Dawson’s career, the show did not want to have her spending the rest of the season working with arson:

“We didn’t want to have [Dawson] work so hard to be a firefighter and then ship her off to work in arson. To put all that energy into one of the leads, a female, becoming a firefighter — and then have it not come to fruition — that was also a consideration for us. We wanted to get her back to her dream job.”

Ultimately, there is still hope for a family down the road, and while we do get frustrated at the story of a TV character losing a baby (it happens often, and seems at times to be a way of writing yourself out of a difficult position), “Chicago Fire” has enough other things going for it to ease some of our frustrations.
