‘Doctor Who’ season 9 Christmas Special spoilers: First look at Alex Kingston’s return

Doctor -

Longtime fans of River Song, rejoice! The “Doctor Who” Christmas Special this year will be different than most, and largely because we have this fan favorite returning to the show. With Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) now seemingly gone, there is a serious void in the Companion department.

Well, the fun thing with River is that she is more than just a Companion; she’s the Doctor’s wife! Speaking per the Radio Times, showrunner Steven Moffat praised the performance of Alex Kingston and Peter Capaldi, commenting that the two work together in a great way, and it is due in part to getting a chance to have them do some things that other pairings with River and other Doctors were not able to:

“It’s strange because they’re now, in our human terms, the perfect couple … They’re both sexy older people. It’s always been slightly strange before with Matt Smith. Now, yeah, they could actually be married. It works.”

Moffat also described the special as a “great romp,” and we are very excited to see how these two characters function together, and what they are able to uncover. We don’t imagine that Kingston is sticking around long-term as the Companion, but we have to admit that if the chemistry between her and Peter is great, we wouldn’t quite mind that. River Song is already beloved, and sometimes we’re thrilled to dip back into the nostalgia well.

As some more details about the Christmas Special start to pop up, you better believe that we will share them for you here. Watch this space!
