‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 7, episode 5 reaction: Show boss on Bonnie’s surprising new relationship

If you somehow had Bonnie and Enzo being together on “The Vampire Diaries” before the start of this season, it really feels like you deserve at least some sort of medal of commendation. These two were not on our radar, but as it turns out, they are together come the time that the show flashes forward several years. This was a particularly shocking reveal on Thursday night, and it apparently stems from a scene that happened last season.

Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Caroline Dries cites specifically a scene between the two in episode 21 of season 6 as something that they really liked for Michael Malarkey and Kat Graham’s characters, and they decided to take a longer look at it this time:

“Of course, they have no reason to like each other; in the present day, we’ve been telling their hate story. So the whole point is that, when you see them in the future, you’re supposed to be like, ‘Wait, how did they get to there?’ Hopefully it created enough intrigue to keep [fans] guessing.”

In many ways, we do wonder if this is just an opposites-attract sort of situation, or if these two really just uncovered over time that they have way more common ground than they realize. One thing that they do each have in their corner at the moment is the knowledge of the supernatural world like no other, and a survival instinct to get them through impossible circumstances. Maybe this is really what you need to get a relationship off on the right foot.
