‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ spoilers: Is someone drinking blood?

Many years ago, Ryan Murphy suggested that he was not going to let his “American Horror Story” franchise go down the rabbit hole courtesy of vampires and some of those familiar stories. We already have so many other venues for those sort of supernatural stories, so why do it here?

Well, the good news is that it doesn’t appear that the show is going down this same road exactly for the fifth season subtitled “Hotel,” but he is probably going closer to this trope than he ever has before with the series. As a part of a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the prolific showrunner reveals that many characters on this season, including Lady Gaga’s the Countess along with her love interests Donovan (Matt Bomer) and Tristan (Finn Wittrock), are going to be suffering from what he calls an “ancient blood virus”:

“It’s not vampires … It’s really a form of hemophilia in a way. There’s no capes and fangs … Around the middle of the season, we sort of explore the origins of all that and her character and where [the virus] comes from.”

So while there are no fangs and people turning into bats, there are some other elements of this story that we interested to see. For example, are these characters going to kill as a means to acquire the blood? Superficially, that is what would make the most amount of sense unless they’ve got some sort of blood bank set aside, and that is not nearly as scary for the sake of the story.
