‘Mistresses’ season 3 spoilers: Yunjin Kim on surprising Karen storyline

Should we really be surprised by anything on “Mistresses” at this point? Probably not, but the show is doing something bold with the Karen character moving forward and we’re interested in see what happens with it. Typically, polyamorous relationships on TV shows are depicted mostly as a joke, or something that frat movies do to get a bunch of people taking their clothes off at the same time. The ABC series is doing something different here with the Karen character, and that includes taking the subject matter seriously and presenting a complicated relationship between Karen, Alec, and Vivian. Karen could see herself falling for both of them.

We knew that this would be a storyline that would be present both tonight and next week, but based on what Yunjin Kim said on the subject to TV Guide, this could be a story that lasts through much of the season:

“Throughout the season, it’s really about the love between the two women [and] she’s very confused by it … She’s someone who’s never had an experience with a woman, and not just a woman but also [her husband]. So it’s going to get messy and clunky… and it doesn’t settle until the very last episode.”

We feel very much like this is going to be a storyline that is for the most part fun to explore, and largely because it is something that is a little edgy, but still in line with the show’s tone. The writers will most-likely find a way to craft this in the style of the show, and depending on how this story goes, we could learn even more about Karen in the process.
