‘UnREAL’ episode 3 review: On Maya, Adam, Roger, and ‘Mother’

UnREAL -For those of you who are enjoying “UnREAL” on Lifetime, tonight’s new episode is another strong reminder that the world of “Everlasting” is not becoming any more peaceful as time goes by and romance is supposedly happening. Instead, new developments are making things more and more chaotic. (Warning: SPOILERS ahead.)

Take, for example, with Quinn, who is starting to realize more and more that she does not want to do this dance with Chet. The creator of the series may be successful, but he also doesn’t value her really on any level. His health scare was a chance to turn things around, but that really hasn’t happened. Instead, it almost seems to be more of a wakeup call for her to try to get out of dodge than anything else … with the problem being that the two do still need to work together.

Meanwhile, for Rachel working on the show she is starting to see more of what is at stake here for Adam Cromwell as he attempts to rebuild a brand through the show. The problem is that even his own friends are not that interested in helping him. As we saw tonight, one of them in Roger was more interested in trying to sleep with his suitor Maya, while one of the producers put her in a position to be violated by encouraging the behavior. Very uncomfortable stuff, given that you consider how complicit a reality TV production may have been in something so horrendous as this.

Adam did have it within his heart to ignore Roger’s advice and spend some more time with Maya, who is sticking around.

The entire production aspect of the show is incredibly compelling. The scenes with Rachel and her family? Not as much. The less we have of that / the relationship with her ex, the happier we probably are in the end. This is a smart, innovative show, and one that works at its best when focusing on what makes it stand out. Grade: B+.
