‘Once Upon a Time’ season 5 debate: Is there any redeeming Zelena?

Wicked Witch -Now that we know that Rebecca Mader has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming fifth season of “Once Upon a Time,” and with that, isn’t it time for the floodgates of speculation to start to open a little bit?

Zelena is a very interesting character on the show, first and foremost because of how obvious it is that she is intelligent … fiercely so, even. She is capable of great evil, and concocting plans like the one that she did to try to take away her sister’s happiness courtesy of Robin Hood. Now, just imagine how useful she could be if she used some of those powers for good instead of evil. This is a show that really does like to stress that there are very few people who are “too far gone” from doing the right thing. We’ve seen Regina make the change, and we’re also seeing Rumpelstiltskin on his way to something now that he no longer is the Dark One. We know that Zelena was not born terrible, and she mostly became this way out of jealousy and rage over being forgotten in various ways.

With all of this said, it’s going to be hard for this character to turn around at this point, especially given the resume of all that she has done. Maybe a child could turn her around and start to make her consider her choices, but it wasn’t like she really decided to get pregnant because she wanted the kid. Instead, it was more about what the child represented. She’s more interesting because she is not 100% evil, but at this point we can’t imagine anyone thinking that she is anything else. That good that was once in her is now so far buried under hate and anger.

Whatever happens to Zelena, it should be fascinating. The promotion itself proves that the producers have huge plans.
