‘True Detective’ season 2: A promise for many strong female characters
For the most part, the first season of “True Detective” ended up being extremely well-received by almost everyone who saw it. However, at the same time there were a few pretty harsh critics out there with a variety of different criticisms for the show. Specifically, some bemoaned the lack of strong female characters, and there were even proclamations out there that the second season feature a woman in a leading role.
What show creator Nic Pizzolatto has done here is ultimately create a season that is the story that he wants to tell. There are strong female characters throughout including Amy (played by Rachel McAdams) and Alicia (played by Abigail Spencer); however, at the same they were created for the sake of producing the best narrative rather than trying to please a certain base.
There is a lot to be excited about by these women, at least based on a pretty lengthy quote that Spencer gave on the subject recently to Deadline:
“You know, this season is very different than season 1 and there are more characters this season. I think that you can tell from the first trailers that have been released that Rachel McAdams’ character is not lacking on complexity or strength. I find women in general just amazingly complex and strong, so I don’t lead with that, but I definitely want to serve my character’s throughline, and there are times when she’s going to be incredibly strong and yet incredibly fragile, incredibly broken, trying to do the right thing as I think all the characters on the show are. So, I felt incredibly supported by Nic and the material to do that and it’s really cool just to be a part of this moment with True Detective and with television in general. In the last year I’ve gotten to play Amantha on Rectify and then to play another amazing character on True Detective and then on Suits. I’m getting a lot of opportunities to do really cool stuff, so I’m speaking to the generality I guess of where television is at, but particularly on True Detective there’s going to be some amazing performances from the women on the show for sure.”
The sad part of this is strictly waiting. Spencer’s character in particular has been kept under tight wraps ever since it was first uncovered that she would be on the show. Maybe you’ll have to see what happens when the show airs … but as long as the role is fantastic, we’re fine with the series taking its time.
