Tonight, “The Late Late Show with James Corden” premieres on CBS, and we are going to hopefully see a crazy series of interviews that include a mixture of humor and insight.
Before we get to the content of this particular preview below, let’s talk about the set! There are two things that stand out to us here almost from the get-go: The giant free publicity for the famous Roosevelt Hotel in the background, and also Corden’s own chair, which looks like something you can get at Office Depot for a reasonable price. It strikes us as different than what we see on most other talk shows. Then again, maybe James wants to be seen as an everyman? He’s not particularly well-known to Americans, so it’s possible that this was something that was on his mind (or we’re reading too much into this chair).
What’s also different? The interview format, since the guests are brought out together. You can see both Mila Kunis and Tom Hanks! This format is relatively similar to what we see on some other shows like “Graham Norton,” or even “Conan” here in America. It’s fun! We prefer this format the majority of the time, since it produces more spontaneous moments. Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and David Letterman are the only hosts we can think of who really benefit from a one-on-one style, mostly because they are so quick and good at bouncing off questions.
The one thing that we’ll say here is that we hope the entire show is not about topics that are in gossip columns most of the time. With that being said, we understand why the focus is on what it is in this particular preview; Kunis’ relationship with Ashton has been a hot topic for some time, and if he did not bring it up in this context, he probably would have been criticized.
