‘Once Upon A Time’ season 2, episode 4 review: Can Rumpelstiltskin be honest with Belle?

Ever since Belle and Rumpelstiltskin were reunited on “Once Upon A Time” she has really been struggling with his obsession with power and magic. Will they find a balance or will Belle end up leaving him?

Rumpelstiltskin: We learned that his wife had a very difficult time after he fled the ogre wars and he was labeled a coward. She tried (albeit not very hard) to stay with him, but it was n=mostly for their son’s sake that is until Captain Hook (well before he became Hook that is) came into town and after a night of flirtation in the bar, he takes her aboard his ship to sail off and be a companion to his crew. Rumpelstiltskin asks for his wife back, but Hook says that he will have to duel for her – Rumpelstiltskin refuses and loses his wife. Years later – after Rumpelstiltskin get his power he runs into Hook again and he tells Rumpelstiltskin that his wife is dead. He challenges Hook to that duel and just as he is about to end Hook’s life… Rumpelstiltskin’s wife appears. She explains that she is in love with him and that they have been together ever since. She offers the magic bean in exchange for their lives, abut when she tells him that she never loved him Rumpelstiltskin kills her. He still walks off with the magic bean… and Hook’s hand. Or did he? When he opens Hook’s hand there is no bean inside.

Belle: She is really struggling with Rumpelstiltskin still practicing magic even though it drove them apart in the past and she runs away from him. She gets a job at Granny’s and thinks about re-opening the library, but she is kidnapped by a man and brought to meet her father. Her father tries to convince her to leave Rumpelstiltskin behind and when she tells him it’s her choice to make, her father hires the kidnapper to bring her to the town line so that she will forget him. Rumpelstiltskin learns her father’s plan and goes after her to save her memory – and he does. After being saved, she cuts her father out of her life, and the same goes for Rumpelstiltskin since he lies to her too much.

Later Rumpelstiltskin tries to make amends by giving her the key to the library, and the upstairs apartment. He opens up to her in a way he never has before, explaining that he’s using magic to try to get his son back. After being completely open and honest with her, he says good bye to her… but she opens her heart to him and they plan a date.

This was a delicious introduction to Captain Hook and his connection to Rumpelstiltskin. It’s going to be a fun season to see these two meet up again. There is some serious unfinished business here and Rumpelstiltskin is on a mission to find him. Episode grade: A-
