‘Once Upon a Time’ season 4, episode 13 reaction: Kristin Bauer van Straten on Maleficent shocker

Maleficent -Through most of tonight’s new episode of “Once Upon a Time,” we seriously thought that the big “shocker” was that Emma had a ton of darkness in her heart, waiting to come out. Little did we realize in the process that there was something waiting in the wings that we never saw coming: Maleficent lost a child, and it was because of Snow that it happened.

So where do we go from here? You’re not going to have to wait too much longer to find out some answers. Speaking to TV Guide in a new interview, co-creator Adam Horowitz made it clear that there are many questions that will be answered when it comes to this child and what happened:

“You will learn how it’s made and how she gets it … What we’re going to see is the critical juncture of how the baby is born and what comes a bit after it’s born. We’re going to obviously explore how she lost her child. And at that end of that episode, I think you can see on her face that it was a very painful experience.”

Meanwhile, Kristin Bauer van Straten relished the chance to get to play a story, and one that is so different from other versions of the Maleficent character we’ve seen over the years:

“It was really enjoyable at the beginning to think she’s just 100 percent reptile and doesn’t have the DNA to feel remorse for her actions, 100 percent selfish in her goals and desires … I imagined what it was like to be pretty much all the billionaires on earth. Then it thrills me when I actually can put some sort of Achilles heel in there and that it becomes part of that pure pain, that she imagines it will feel good and make her feel happy to make that pain she feels inside to make someone else feel.”

All we know is that with this news in mind, the story for the Queens of Darkness almost instantly becomes all the more complicated. Are they really 100% evil at all?
