‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Zac Brown Band performs ‘Homegrown,’ ‘Heavy Is the Head’ with Chris Cornell

SNL -One of the good things about booking the Zac Brown Band for “Saturday Night Live” is that they aren’t just one of the stronger country acts out there at the moment, but they also are one of the better acts that you can have live. They’re a full band, so you get the genuine live-music feel. Some artists on this show overthink what they are doing, and really should just give you a more straightforward performance.

The first song that the band performed was “Homegrown,” the band’s new single that is only around six weeks old at this point. While they bridge for the song was a little all over the place in terms of being in key, the verses and the chorus were top-notch. Also, this is such an easy song to jam along to. We’re not sure that it will go down as the best performance of the season, but it didn’t give anything for the press to really bash. Their fans should mostly eat it up.

As for the second song, it’s a track called “Heavy Is the Head” that is a little bit unknown. This is hardly even a country song at all; it’s much more in the realm of classic Southern rock. Lots of great musicianship in here, and this was a nice showcase for the song. It appeals to crossover audiences in addition to probably pleasing some of the show’s faithful. Also, Chris Cornell made an appearance!

Zac Brown Band’s new album drops a little later this spring.
