‘Arrow’ / ‘The Flash’ spin-off debate: Should Caity Lotz play Sara Lance, or whole new character?

More news -It has been over a week now since it was first reported that a new spin-off is coming for “Arrow” and “The Flash,” and even still, we are no closer to really understanding it now than we were then. How in the world do Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), The Atom (Brandon Routh), Martin Stein (Victor Garber), and whoever Caity Lotz is playing work as an ensemble? Are they all heroes? Is Captain Cold the head of a mythical league of villains?

Given that the two current shows will be at PaleyFest soon, we imagine that answers are coming … but we are also impatient. Therefore, we wanted to spend this article posing a question that has haunted us since the idea was announced: How is Caity involved here? It’s easy to bring the other characters over, mostly because they are all alive. Sara Lance has been dead since the second episode of “Arrow” season 3. Do you throw her body in the Lazarus Pit, or give her a completely different character to play?

The case for more Sara – Many fans already love her, and feel like she is the Canary they first rooted for on the show. Also, awesome fight choreography. Given how many other times The CW has stretched reality on some of their other shows, it wouldn’t be that insane to learn that someone dug her up and brought her back to life in Frankenstein fashion. Heck, zombie Sara Lance could probably even have an “iZombie” crossover with Rose McIver. (Okay, probably kidding on that last bit.)

The case for someone new – Right now, our preference is that you cast Lotz as another female hero from the DC universe, mostly because there are so many out there. What about Stargirl, Power Girl, or Zatanna? Give her a character where she can have a different backstory, and change up her look a little bit so it’s not that obvious it is the same actress in the part. You also want people to cheer on Laurel as Black Canary, and if you just have Sara as the original Canary again, you are almost asking for them to be continuously compared again.
