‘Call the Midwife’ season 4, episode 4 review: Is Trixie’s engagement in trouble?
On “Call the Midwife,” nothing stays very constant (or very pleasant) for long. A few weeks ago, we thought that Trixie was on the road to having an extremely happy future, and with a man she loves in Tom.
Tonight’s episode threw a wrench into that and then some. As the episode progressed and Trixie struggled with her mistakes, she started to feel like there was no way that she would be able to live up to the expectations that he would have for her, given his position. Therefore, she did what she thought was the right thing for herself in that given moment: She tried to walk away from the relationship.
Aside from Trixie’s hard decision (which we do not necessarily feel is permanent), tonight’s episode brought to us a series of other good moments, including many for Chummy, who we still feel is being somewhat-underutilized this season. The strong undercurrent of feminism in this hour was refreshing; this series continues to manage to allow for female sovereignty, without pushing it over the top in a way that would not properly fit into the world of the show.
The only significant issue that we had with this episode was almost the lack of a majorly intriguing issue. After the strong plotline about the status of homosexuality in the time period, we were hoping for something equally as powerful this time. We’re not quite sure that we found that. If you are going to tell standalone stories on this show, our advice for you is to ensure that they are top-notch almost every second from start to finish.
