‘Justified’ season 6, episode 3 review: Who’s side is Ava really on?

JustifiedNow that Ava has gotten it together enough to try and play Boyd on “Justified” will his feelings for her continue to blind him or will he eventually figure out that she is working for Raylan as a C.I.? With this being the last season for the show, we expected it to be good, but so far this is easily the most layered season we’ve seen. Boyd is back to being the big bad of the show and all of the characters that we’ve become so invested in are front and center drowning under piles of problems.

After helping Boyd realize that the deed to the pizza joint is where an old bank used to be Ava and Boyd spent the night celebrating, drinking and bonding. what is great about this relationship at this point is that we really don’t know if she is playing him anymore or if she is still in love with him.

Rachel is starting to get frustrated with Ava since she hasn’t been able to get any information on Boyd and they have now come in to rough her up (emotionally that is) and have given her one week to come up with something useful on Boyd or she’s going back to jail.

After her warning an opportunity reveals it’self after Ty Walker threatens Boyd to stay away from the pizza place. Since they know his face, he asks Ava to go to the pizza place and scope out the scene for him and she does taking pictures of the old vault downstairs.

Unfortunately Ava gets made when she’s at the pizza place and Ty Walker gives Boyd a second (and last warning) to stay away. Not only that but after Ty’s chat with Boyd, he and Avery (Catherine’s ex-partner and current lover) head over to Ava’s house for a little chat with her. Boyd comes in and tries to smooth things over and they are told that if they ever come to the pizza joint again he will kill both of them.

After Boyd’s chat with Avery and Ty he heads over to see Catherine and Wynn where she admits everything about her relationship with Avery. While she expects Boyd to back down after learning the truth he tells her that he’s still going to rob him.

What was interesting about this episode was that it was very Boyd and Ava heavy with both of them getting the juicer story line this season. There’s something about Boyd and Ava being the underdogs that make us want to root for them even though they are supposed to be the bad guys. Episode grade: B+
