Super Bowl commercials: Emilia Clarke of ‘Game of Thrones’ in ‘Terminator: Genisys’

Genisys -It is not often that we talk about movie trailers here at CarterMatt and that’s for a simple reason: We are not a film site only TV, TV and more TV. However, we’re fine with breaking the mold a little when discussing Super Bowl commercials that are trailers, and also feature someone very familiar to TV viewers such as “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke.

This is precisely what we have for you below in the form of the “Terminator: Genisys” TV spot. Clearly, a ton of money went into buying this Super Bowl spot, so was it worth it? We’re not going to analyze this as a trailer so much as a commercial selling a product, much in the same way that we have other ads throughout the day so far.

The good – Obviously the “Terminator” brand is big. Great use of action sequences, and making sure you have Arnold saying that signature “I’ll be back” line is an excellent bit of fan service. For only thirty seconds (short for a movie spot, even during the big game), there is a whole lot crammed in there.

The bad – There’s not a whole lot of Clarke, or at least not enough to really know how she is going to be in the movie. Also, no real explanation of the story other than explosions. The major selling point for now still seems to be “pay tons of money just to see us blow stuff up on the big screen.”

The verdict – It will probably make a ton of money, and be a boon for stars like Clarke beyond “Game of Thrones” (which is nice since typically TV stars get typecast and then they are Ross and Rachel for the res of their lives). We’re just not sold enough after watching this that it is the worth the money to see it opening weekend. Grade: B-.
