‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6 spoilers: Ian Somerhalder on how Liz’s impending death impacts Damon

The current storyline on “The Vampire Diaries” is certainly a different one than most. Sheriff Liz Forbes is not a woman who is being struck down suddenly by a spell or a set of vampire fangs; instead, she is dealing with a terrible cancer diagnosis that charts and end date on her life. While we’ve seen the characters do what they can to figure out if there is a way to cure her, they have not been able to pull that off. Clearly, they’ve found solutions to many supernatural occurrences, but clearly there is something a little different about a human ailment that has been around since the beginning of time.

Obviously, we know that this is going to impact Caroline, and of course the women she grew up with in both Elena and Bonnie. What about Damon? The two have had an interesting bond over the years, and this is something that Ian Somerhalder talked about in a new interview with TV Guide:

“It affects Damon a great deal … Damon and Liz Forbes have a total love for each other; she has been very good to him. Damon likes to control things in life by virtue of being hurt… he wants to turn the valve down to [prevent] any other outside forces he can’t control come in. Liz is one of those things where the valve is open and gushing and crushes him.”

There is not necessarily any guarantee that Liz is going to die, but in this case, it is probably the best move to expect the worst, and hope for the best in case something magically turns around at the end of the day.
