Nicole Kidman’s ‘Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ appearance is awkward, hilarious

While “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” has produced wonderful skits and viral videos over the years, we’ve always felt that Fallon’s weakness comes with spontaneity and the nature of many of his interviews. Often, they just come across as pandering, and seemed rushed just to get to some silly game being played later.

Not this time! We are actually pretty convinced that his interview with Nicole Kidman, who is promoting her new movie “Paddington,” may be the funniest thing that we’ve ever seen on his show. Namely, it stems from Jimmy’s own past with the actress. The two collectively tell a story about how years ago, Nicole, who was actually interested in dating Jimmy, paid him a visit to his apartment after speaking with a mutual friend. What she found was an awkward guy wearing a ball cap who had scant food in his apartment, seemed to be completely distracted, and was more interested in playing video games. Jimmy seemingly had no idea that there was ever a chance at anything romantic there, and the moment all of this revelations came to light in the segment, hilarity ensued.

Obviously, the two each moved on to marry other people and have children, but that does not make this any less funny to see Jimmy squirm over all of the little things that he did that were completely terrible in terms of impressing a woman. At one point, Nicole said that she wondered at the time if he was gay, and she debated when she wanted to go on his show since she knew that this was going to come up.

This is the sort of interview we want to see more of from Fallon; while he’s not going to have a great story like this every week, anytime that he can tap from his own personal history is great for the audience.
