Fox sets premiere for M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Wayward Pines’
“Wayward Pines” is one of those shows that we want to get really excited about, but there is a nagging part of our brain telling us that this is a bad idea. After all, we have a number of reasons for feeling this way.
First and foremost, the show has the name of M. Night Shyamalan on it. At one point, we genuinely felt like he was one of the most brilliant people working. We really loved all of his first three movies. We even for the most part liked “The Village,” and to a certain extent enjoyed “Lady in the Water.” Then, everything else happened.
Also, this is Fox. This is not a network that is batting anywhere close to 100 right now. “Utopia” was a catastrophe, “Gracepoint” was a commercial flop, “Mulaney” tanked, and “Red Band Society” will most likely be canceled. “Gotham” is the only real hit they have this year, and that is probably just because of the Batman name and the memorable characters.
So with these things in mind, we’re entering this ten-episode limited series, which focuses on a Secret Service agent (Matt Dillon) visiting an Idaho community looking for missing agents, with low expectations. It sounds a little like “Gracepoint” meets “Twin Peaks,” but who knows about the quality? Shyamalan directed the premiere, which we now know will air on Thursday, May 14 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
Some out there may think of this as Fox burying the show in the summer, but we see this move more as trying to give it the “24: Live Another Day” treatment. Unfortunately, this does not have Jack Bauer kicking anyone out of a window.
