‘Top Chef: Boston’ episode 5 review: Did you see this elimination coming?
Typically, there is an unwritten rule of reality TV, at least for competition shows: If you cause a whole lot of drama, you get eliminated a little later after you should.
Luckily, this is not a rule that “Top Chef” follows. Despite our feeling that the outspoken Aaron was going to be staying put for an extended period of time in the competition, he saw himself packing his knives at the end of Wednesday night’s new episode, and probably deservedly so. On a night when many people cooked great food for a showdown themed around the Revolutionary War, he tried to do a little too much and his team was a little too lax on allowing him to do so. They had lined him up last, and we wondered if this was almost a vote of no-confidence in hopes that they did not have to use him.
From an entertainment standpoint, though, we’re going to miss them. Also, we get a little tired of listening to chef confessionals where they constantly list off all of the reasons why they are qualified and deserve to win in the end. Sometimes, it’s good to have an underdog on the show who can stir things up a little.
Wednesday night’s episode did feature what we would mostly classify as a few significant bumps in the road for the show, with one of them being the giant Reynolds Wrap commercial early on, and with another serving as the general running-scared nature of this season. It is almost like no one really wants to challenge the favorites this season like Gregory or Mei, and they would rather just have them compete against each other. Basically, that is no fun for anyone.
We still feel like it is early, and that could lead to some great expressions of creativity down the road. “Top Chef: Boston” does still, unfortunately, have some things to prove after this episode. Grade: B-.
