‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11: Caterina Scorsone on Derek’s harsh reaction

Last night, “Grey’s Anatomy” season 11 aired an episode that is extremely important to the character of Amelia, and in turn, really important to how we perceive the character of Derek right now.

Just how much have things changed for the characters? Well, Amelia thought that she was coming to Seattle to not only get a new lease on life, but to also help out her brother after he was going through some difficult decisions. He’s been especially crabby ever since opting not to go to Washington DC, and his reaction to the news of her history with narcotics is not something to be treated lightly.

As you would expect, this rocked Amelia’s world, and speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about how he did not reach out to her right away, Caterina Scorsone details what was going through her character’s head:

“It changes what Amelia understands of their dynamic … She’s always seen herself as the black sheep of the family. He’s always been this generous benefactor to her. We have a reversal happening. She came to Seattle to help him with his life, and he’s pulled the legs out from under her.”

Will there eventually be some sort of emotional turnaround here for the characters? We are hoping for it, mostly because it seems like there is only so long that the show can continue to take us down a dark, depressing abyss with Derek. His relationship with Meredith is at a breaking point, and there is really only one week ahead for things to get a little better before a lengthy hiatus.
