‘Saturday Night Live’: Is it new tonight? Also, talking Bill Hader, return of Stefon (again)
As we said the last time that “Saturday Night Live” aired a repeat episode this year, we’re doing something a little different in focusing on one sketch individually over some highlights of what was better or worse upon repeat viewing. Basically, we were finding that there was little difference.
With tonight’s repeat being all about Bill Hader, to us there was really no question as to what part of the show we were going to discuss: Stefon. The character is an institution, and may be one of the five most-popular characters in the 40-year history of the show.
With that being said, does his first sketch with Michael Che and Colin Jost live up to the hype? It is still very funny going back and watching it again, and by and large thanks to the parts that don’t appear that scripted. Hader seems to catch Che and Jost off-guard a few times, and his reactions to everything on the show are almost always great … including his breaks upon hearing the name of a certain MTV personality time and time again.
Our biggest critique this time around is that one Hader break during Stefon is great, but this one was almost a little too over-the-top. If we do see this character on the show again someday (which probably would not happen for at least another year, if not longer), we would recommend maybe only tricking him once or twice.
Oh, and have Seth Meyers show up. The fact that he never appeared was a shoe that we were waiting to drop the entire sketch. Alas, the “Late Night” host was actually doing comedy elsewhere in the country at the time.
