‘American Idol’ season 14 spoilers: Phillip Phillips, Carrie Underwood, more in first promo
For their first promo for the upcoming 14th season of “American Idol,” it feels mostly like the powers-that-be over at Fox have a very particular agenda: Reminding us as much as humanly possible that what separates this show from every other won is that there were major success stories on it … even if most of them auditioned more than five years ago.
Phillip Phillips seems to be the show’s standby “recent champion with success,” given that he is highlighted in the video below alongside Carrie Underwood and other superstars. Meanwhile, you also see a little more of what we’ve come to know “American Idol” for over the years: The big auditions, which include everything from pressure to a little bit of goofiness. There are some who go into this with confidence, and others who are shy out of their minds.
For the most part, we are okay with having Keith Urban, Harry Connick Jr., and Jennifer Lopez back as judges. The only thing that really made us hate them at all last year was how the cameramen decided to make J.Lo the center of attention during the live performances. Leave the camera on the singers! Is that so hard?
This is going to be in many ways a make-it-or-break-it year for the show, given that its ratings have tumbled mightily over the years, and we are now in an era where many consider singing shows to be dying. The only thing that may save it is how terrible the rest of Fox’s lineup is right now. They have “Gotham” and to an extent “Bones” and “Sleepy Hollow,” but very little else.
