‘Doctor Who’ season 8, episode 9 preview: Clara takes on monsters within walls

Flatline -While this eighth season of “Doctor Who” has at times been uneven, Steven Moffat and company have done a good job occasionally coming up with unique ways to send a chill down our spine. We’ve seen mysteries that lie underneath our beds (“Listen”), crazy spider-creatures (“Kill the Moon”), and a mummy that could very well be the Egyptian Medusa (“Mummy on the Orient Express”).

So for Saturday’s “Flatline,” we’re going to take on one of the most interesting adversaries to date, mostly because we are not even entirely sure that this is an enemy that has a physical form. As the sneak peek video below makes it clear, Clara (Jenna Coleman) is having to take on something within the walls, and there doesn’t seem to be any protection from it. Why isn’t the Doctor there to completely help her? Based on what we have heard about this episode, Peter Capaldi’s character is going to be somehow trapped, and that forces the Companion to in this instance by the hero.

Are we excited about this episode? At the moment, definitely. We know now everyone out there prefers the Companion to take center stage over the Doctor, but we’re fine with it if it is an anomaly, and not just the way things are all of the time. Plus, Coleman has shown herself to be a capable enough actress to handle this sort of stuff.

The thing that sends a chill down our spine is that it was such a long wait to get to season 8, and we’re already starting to near the end of it. We’ve got a few more episodes this fall, and then the Christmas Special that marks the end of the road.
