‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 2, episode 4 review: Melinda May vs. ‘Melinda May’

Agents of SHIELD -Tonight’s new episode of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” is certainly carrying with it an “Orphan Black” vibe, especially when it comes to some of the battle scenes.

How awesome was Melinda May this week? She clearly had her work cut out for her, mostly in that she had to face one of her most dangerous foes to date: Herself … sort of. This was actually a great test of the Coulson character’s relationship with his team, since he had to use personal details in order to figure out whether or not this version of the character was a fake. The final tell? This version of her wanted to get coffee, which is something that the actual Melinda May would never want to do in a million years.

While all of this was going on, Fitz was still trying to handle some conflicted feelings after the Simmons saga, and Coulson was already starting to think about an exit strategy in the case that something (else) happens to him. He wanted Melinda to lead the new version of the SHIELD … and then by the end of the episode, he wanted her to actually go ahead and kill him before things with his mind became worse. A hard choice, no? We doubt we’re losing Coulson, so don’t event think that.

This episode was in the end the strongest of the entire season, mostly because it really got that epic feel about it that we had throughout the final episodes of season 1. There were threats, torn allegiances, and above all a great cliffhanger related to the Obelisk. Grade: B+.
