‘Hell on Wheels’ season 4: Take another look back while we wait

Hell on Wheels -Ladies and gentlemen, we are now in the midst of what is a rough hiatus for all fans of “Hell on Wheels.” There was no new episode this weekend, and it will be November until we see the show return to AMC in order to wrap things up.

So in order to try to keep us firmly established within this world of Cheyenne while we wait for new episodes, we’re spacing out some of the coverage of episode 10, which aired nine days ago. Today, that means discussing the cast and producers’ reaction to the big episode “Return to Hell.”

In the video below, executive producer John Wirth takes you through all of the events that led to Cullen Bohannon’s confrontation to John Campbell, the burning of the church, and eventually Ruth’s decision to shoot Sydney Snow. Meanwhile, Anson Mount talks about Cullen’s decisions, and how this character continues to try and separate the man that he is right now versus the man that he was years ago. For example, he wasn’t the one to shoot Syd; he wanted to take him in for himself just as much (if not more) than for the integrity of some sort of position like Marshal.

All of these power shifts that took place in “Return to Hell” will carry over into 4×11, as there is an obvious question that haunts many of these characters now: What do you do with Ruth? We have a hard time feeling that the attitude towards her will be entirely unsympathetic, but at the same time, what she did was still wrong. You have to make examples, regardless of if you want to at times. We’ll hope for the best for this character, but in between Elam and Ezra, the writers have been especially daring this season (and we applaud them for that).
