‘Gotham’ episode 2 spoilers: An interesting comparison for the Penguin

Tonight’s “Gotham” episode may be entitled “Selina Kyle,” but based on what we know right now, it may as well be titled “Oswald Cobblepot.” After all, this is when we are going to learn quite a bit about this Penguin character, and what we can expect from him.

While you can for certain expect to see the character back in Gotham (did you really expect him to stay away?), one other important headline is the casting of Carol Kane as the character’s mother. Per Robin Lord Taylor to TVLine, this is a woman he will have a more-than-interesting relationship with:

“Oswald’s mother is the only person he trusts in Gotham City, which is a good thing and a bad thing … For a person like Oswald, who is somewhat depraved, to trust and love anyone… there has to be something a little sadistic going on there.

“I’m not going to say ‘Norman Bates,’ but I guess I just did!”

We really enjoy the portrayal of this Penguin character so far, but the challenge for both this role and the show as a whole is consistency. It was able to create a pretty-strong pilot, but this is the most important time for the series. If you start to lose viewers in the early going, it’s going to be very hard to get them back.
