‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 8: Sheldon Cooper meets football in new promo
We know that the real purpose of the promo below is to raise awareness for “The Big Bang Theory” airing on Mondays for the first few weeks of the upcoming season, but we still cannot help but wonder something a little different: Is all this NFL promotion on CBS right now really a good thing?
While it may make a ton of money for all involved, this is probably the worst time in a while for CBS to have picked up football rights. You’ve got huge distractions right now with Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, and even the network has gotten into a spat with Rihanna over the way that her song was set to be used in the opening segment. (It has since been pulled, and will not be a part of future shows.)
We almost wish that CBS had kept their lineup the same, mostly because we don’t feel like football is something that really needs to be on TV three days a week. It hurts scripted shows, and that’s a good fifteen hours a week (at least) if you choose to watch every game live. That’s close to a full day of time, minus what you spend asleep.
Okay, now we’ll get to the promo. Sheldon’s a hugely popular character, but we also feel like the messaging here is a little weird. Isn’t this show typically about the geeks winning? It’s a little weird here to watch Sheldon get completely obliterated by a football player, almost like this is symbolism for CBS saying that they care more about the NFL than anything else, even their highest-rated show.
What do you think of this new promo, and are we reading too much into it? Let us know one way or the other in the comments, and you can also head over to the link here in the event you want more sent right to your email via our CarterMatt Newsletter.
