‘MasterChef’ season 5, episode 12 preview: Football in the rain and more

We’ve made it very little secret that we traditionally dislike these “MasterChef” teams challenges, largely in the same way we find the “Hell’s Kitchen” tasks dull and repetitive. Seeing the same dish cooked a million times isn’t that interesting, especially when it’s nothing particularly gourmet in this case.

This challenge, after all, is all about cooking at a football game, and there are really only a few foods that you can consider to be football-game staples. We’re of course talking about chicken, burgers, barbecue, and the like. This just makes us want to go and cook some ourselves.

Where this team challenge could become somewhat interesting is the weather conditions. Somehow, the show managed to film this challenge on the one actual day in which it was raining in Southern California (locals to the region will understand that), and the rain is going to fall while they are trying to showcase their cooking skills. We do feel like this will make things a million times harder, and also a million times more interesting. Some of the cooks may ultimately decide that they are too good to be out in the rain, and the judges just have to grin and bear it since the last thing that they want is to come across as divas on TV.

After this, there will be yet another pressure test, where we’ll start to figure out whether or not some of the big personalities this season start to go home. Leslie, Big Willie, and Cutter, for example, have all been in danger at times.
