‘Call the Midwife’ season 4: Meet Charlotte Ritchie’s new character Barbara

BBC One -Despite being in production, the BBC has done a good job of keeping some details under wraps about “Call the Midwife” season 4 … which we would be so bold as to call a make-it-or-break-it season for the series. Just think about it for a minute. You know longer have Jessica Raine as the star, and you are also diverting from the work of Jennifer Worth. These are huge risks, and that means typically either a big reward or a disastrous result.

So of course in the wake of Raine’s exit, we are going to have new characters! This includes Barbara, played by relative newcomer Charlotte Ritchie. She apparently bears a slight resemblance to Raine, and a source tells the Mirror the following about her character:

“Barbara is very young, green and naïve. She is also in a permanent state of disarray – on her first day she arrives late, running down the street dropping things all over the place. Her organisational skills are terribly lacking and she is also very nervous and unsure of herself.”

This sounds like she will be a character who is fun to watch, and that we’ll be able to relate to some of her imperfections almost right away. The only issue that she may run into is something that we fear for with almost any newcomer to a show: Dealing with the weight of huge expectations. Given that so many people loved Raine and her achievements to the show, it’s only understandable that they will have strong opinions one way or the other here.

The new season of “Call the Midwife” will premiere early next year in the UK on BBC One, and in March on PBS in America.
