‘The Leftovers’ episode 6 preview: ‘Guest,’ and the story of Nora Durst
So far on “The Leftovers,” Nora Durst has not entirely been a major character. After all, she is mostly know for just being one the only resident of Mapleton to lose her entire family in the departure.
However, much of this may change during next week’s episode entitled “Guest.” Much like the Matt-centric episode earlier this season, this may be an hour that is entirely focused on one character. Kevin didn’t appear in the promo for the episode, and neither did Matt or any other major character. The same goes for a suspected appearance in the official synopsis:
“Nora goes to New York for the second annual Departure Related Occupations and Practices (DROP) conference, but discovers that someone else has her ID badge, so she searches the convention as a “Guest,” and has encounters with a salesman, an author and a rogue attendee.”
The idea of this episode reminds us greatly of Damon Lindelof’s previously great show in “Lost,” where we saw a little bit of this almost every week with different character stories. The reason we cared so much about that show is that we cared so much about all of its cast members. Slowly, this show is making us do the same.
At first, our major concern about the show was that it was strictly too depressing, but over time, it is starting to whittle away at us. It’s not that the show has become any more warm and fuzzy, but we’ve come to understand the pain of Kevin more, and the humanity that is still within the strange people within this world.
