‘Sherlock’ season 4: Benedict Cumberbatch on Holmes, animation, and much more
Do you want to see one of the more awkward Comic-Con panels of the entire weekend? We feel like the one below for “The Penguins of Madagascar” really has to be near the top of the list. You had Benedict Cumberbatch of “Sherlock” fame, and then many of the movie’s other creative personalities to talk about the production, the nomination process, and what lies ahead with moderator Craig Ferguson.
The thing is that we warned everyone about this in advance. You put a guy in Cumberbatch who has never been at Comic-Con before on the panel, and he is of course going to receive the majority of the questions. What made this even more awkward was the announcement from Ferguson that if there were any questions about “Sherlock,” Comic-Con would be effectively “canceled.” A joke certainly, but we imagine that most of the audience had to change their questions at the last minute because of this.
So while there is little “Sherlock” coverage in here (though we would expect a panel on the show to come to Comic-Con next year), you do get a lot of great Benedict humor. It’s largely just great to see him in this environment, given that this is something that he has never been a part of before despite being someone very beloved within the entertainment world. He has a quick wit when responding to his fans, and also knows the right spots to integrate humor.
Also, there is one moment in here when he proves himself to actually be nerdier than most of the audience with a joke off of a “Doctor Strange” reference. (He was rumored to be playing that part for a while.)
