‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’: Kathy Bates on her recent run

Bates -At the moment, now has to be a great time to be Kathy Bates. She’s done more in film than the majority of actors do combined, and now she is getting the chance to do all sorts of great stuff within the world of TV. Even though her NBC show “Harry’s Law” did not exactly have the longevity many hoped for, it did have a ton of viewers (who were just not in the right demographic for advertisers) and it allowed her to transition further to the medium.

Now, she’s in a truly phenomenal place thanks to a variety of work. She has the new Melissa McCarthy movie “Tammy” out there that features her, and she is also a part of “American Horror Story” for the second straight year. She may not be saying much on her role right now, but we’re certainly hoping that it will be meaty and full of entertainment like LaLaurie was on “Coven.”

Even Bates is surprised that she is getting to do such a variety of great stuff now, at least according to her new interview with the Associated Press:

“I can’t believe it. Let’s face it. When (her TV series) ‘Harry’s Law’ got canceled and right after that I found out I had breast cancer and I had a double mastectomy that summer, I was pretty low. And I felt like I’d been kicked to the curb. And I didn’t know if I would ever work again. And then, a year later, along came Melissa and (‘American Horror Story’ producer) Ryan Murphy. I’m just grateful for all that. A few months ago, I made the choice not to have (breast) reconstruction, because it occurred to me, ‘I don’t want to go back to bed. I don’t want to be on (the painkiller) Oxycodone for two months. I’m having too much fun.'”

We cannot imagine Kathy not being offered more roles anytime soon, either. Murphy will likely continue using her so long as she wants to be a part of the show, and we are more than grateful for that.
