‘The Bachelorette’ spoilers: Why producers ‘couldn’t ignore’ Eric Hill death on TV
Over the next week or so, we expect to see all sorts of controversial claims out there about “The Bachelorette” and the way that the death of Eric Hill is handled on TV. After all, this is a media universe that likes to look at everything under a microscope,
As for what sort of defense you are going to see from the likes of host Chris Harrison, the producers, and maybe even Andi Dorfman herself, we figured it best to go ahead and give you a sneak peek now. Speaking to TV Guide after Monday’s episode aired, Harrison explained why it was so troubling for producers to figure out what to do here, and also how they came about deciding that for the sake of the show, everything had to be shown:
“It was really tough for us as producers to know what to do and know how to properly handle this. We had to deal when it happened, which is right around when the show started so we made mention of it then. The most difficult time for us was when it actually happened during the process of filming. We realized it would air almost 10 weeks after he passed away, but we couldn’t ignore it because it made such a big impact on the rest of the season.”
We are willing to give the team a little bit of the benefit of the doubt here, mostly because it felt like they really tried to handle Eric’s death sensitively already, and we doubt that there will be anything coming up that puts him in a negative light. This is also something terrible that you cannot plan for, and while Andi and the guys didn’t know him a long time, their reaction in the promo lets you see just how close this packed environment (where you are cut off from most of the rest of the world) can make you feel to people.
