‘True Blood’ season 7, episode 2 review: Talking that Eric – Jason scene and other stuff

We’re late with this “True Blood” review for travel reasons, but have no fear: For the rest of the season, we will be here and perfectly on-time with the rest of our discussions.

Maybe it is a good thing that we have had a little bit of time to digest what happened on Sunday night, given that there is a certain part of us still fuming over what happened with that Eric Northman – Jason Stackhouse dream sequence. There is a precedent for it on the show, but we still have no real idea why it is there. We feel the same way about that extended scene in the brothel during “Game of Thrones” season 1 where the two women are having sex while Littlefinger is talking. What in the world are we supposed to take from this? If Jason does not reflect this behavior at all in the actual present of the show, it feels mostly like fan service and takes a few minutes away from the rest of the story during the final season of the show.

That part is a shame especially, given that this episode had a lot going on, from Sookie realizing that her connection with Bill was still there to her entire crew realizing that there are entire towns being wiped out right now. We didn’t find Eric until the end of the episode, and he was not exactly in good shape.

The part that we probably enjoyed the most about this hour was the scene with Arlene working to find her way to escape using an old connection to a teacher. Carrie Preston is wonderful, and even though she’s never had the same sort of badass scenes as other characters, she finds ways to make Arlene one of the toughest people in the whole show. That injected some nice humanity into an episode that mostly reminded us that the people in Bon Temps haven’t learned anything about how to protect themselves, and that Alcide is probably going to end up feeling heartbroken at the end of this. Grade: B-.
