‘Covert Affairs’ season 5, episode 1 review: Annie Walker’s devastating return

Covert Affairs -Buckle up: Not only is Annie Walker back, but she is back doing some of what she does best. Unfortunately, doing something well does not necessarily make it easy.

The season 5 premiere of “Covert Affairs” featured Piper Perabo’s character returning back to Washington after months away, and it took attempts at interrogation just to figure out what she may have been up to while she was away. The first part of this episode was something that we found to be rather light and enjoyable, especially the part of it that saw Auggie being back to some of his old ways. (We’re not writing off him and Annie forever, so we have no problem with something like this.)

As we neared the end of the episode, though, the story began to undergo a devastating shift in tone, as Annie’s attempts to stop an attack in Chicago proved fruitless as lives were taken in what was viewed as a direct attack on the agency.

We feel for the journey that this attack is going to take Annie on, since this is just the way that life is for an agent sometimes. You don’t have a second to breathe before you are thrown into another case, and sometimes there is no happy resolution. Not only were lives lost, but she had to take a life personally and that will leave an impact. Even though a lot has happened in the past four years, she is still relatively new at this compared to the other agents that are out there with an extended resume.

This blast did force the characters to examine what matters, and that was the relationships between the characters. However, none of this was enough for Annie to reveal to Auggie what she has been up to the past four months. We suppose we’ll have to trust her … but we’re certainly anxious about it. The good news is that we at least got a heck of a premiere while we wait. Grade: B+.
