‘America’s Got Talent’ review: Laura Dasi, Josh Orlian, Maggie Lane (and a bikini), and Paul Ieti

Another week, and another audition episode of “America’s Got Talent” that was certainly pleasant. Part of the problem at this point may actually be us, given that we expect something that we’ve never seen before after over a decade of watching talent shows. It’s very difficult at this point to impress us.

The acts that we have below from this episode at least did a good job of getting us excited, though we’ll have to wait and see if they can keep up what they started in these audition rounds.

Emily West – A pretty good singer/songwriter, but we don’t really understand the entire complaining about the subway. If you love your craft, why complain at all?

Christian Stoinev – We’ve seen hand balancing on the show before, and we would not say that he did anything new vs. another great one in Christin Sandu. However, great balancing is still great balancing.

Baila Conmigo – A very good, but not revolutionary, salsa dance group. We will almost always prefer this sort of act when there are fewer dancers. It helps for making the emotional connection.

Rachel Butera – A fantastic impressionist, and someone who Howard Stern actually knows. We had a similar situation with Mel B last year. Luckily, it didn’t matter given how everyone else recognized how spot-on some of these are.

Legacy – A true “man band” if there ever was one. All of them have been singing together for a long time, and could be the U.S.A. version of Collabro, the recent winners of “Britain’s Got Talent.”

Mat Franco – One of the best magic acts in a while, at least for this really cool card trick. Our concern is that he may have used his best trick already, but time will tell.

Paul Ieti – We wrote about Paul beforehand, and we knew from YouTube that he was going to be a great performer. No question here that his cover of Rihanna’s “Stay” was going to be good enough.

Grace Ann Gregorio – The next Jackie Evancho? We wouldn’t go that far, but at 11 years old she has a great voice. Also, her name totally sounds like one an opera singer would have.

Maggie Lane – Are there only a few songs that opera singers are allowed to choose for this show? We’re pretty sure that this has been done by every person on the show. The only twist here was this woman’s random temptation to show off a bikini halfway throughout.

Magical Voice Doctor – This was about as magical as getting a bag of groceries. It was mostly a chance to see Howard Stern sing horribly.

Josh Orlian – This is like the filthy version of Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy! We’re talking mostly about the delivery here than anything else. He’s very funny, but also very awkward and he is going to have problems without a ton of material in the future. Still, a great audition.

Laura Dasi – A great, emotional aerial routine to close things off. Also, we’re just happy that the show chose to end the episode on something other than the standard singer. Episode Grade: B.
