‘The Bridge’ season 2 spoilers: Expect a slight shift in tone
Where does a show like “The Bridge” go with its second season? That is something that we are very excited to find out come later this summer, when the show comes back on FX. The first season was a fantastic rendering of a long-form mystery that spanned two countries, and featured a philandering Mexican detective as well as a traumatized one in Texas who also has Asperger’s and does not always relate to others.
While some specific details are still unclear, one of the more significant changes to the season as a whole comes via showrunners. Elwood Reid is now the main man in charge, after fellow EP Meredith Stiehm exited and returned to do some work on her former show “Homeland.”
As for why she left, Reid suggests to The Hollywood Reporter that there were some issues in tone, and his sole participation in season 2 has led to a little more focus:
“Meredith is more comfortable in the world of police procedurals … The hard, emotional stuff was tricky to pull off. I was more willing to go there. [The story is] much more of a weird-character crime mystery now. I’m finally writing the show I want to write.”
The strange feeling we get after reading this is that regardless of if Reid really loved writing the first season or not, we rather enjoyed it and therefore are unsure what we are going to feel about this new season. Then again, having a little anxiety about the show’s future at this point is fairly understandable when you really think about it. Second seasons are always challenging, but even more so on a show where you had a first season that was basically the sole reason why this was called “The Bridge” in the first place.
